4 1/2 Minutes of Love EP (Track 2, B-Side) NewF-Project 1992 White This is my favourite tune from this F Project 3 tracker all down to those melodic string patterns which come in at around 1 mins 30. Starts off at your typical 4/4 breakbeat hardcore stomper and before you know it everything goes pretty and melodic. Quite a mellow tune despite the thumping breaks and massive bass stabs as it relies mostly on pianos and strings. Smooth, uplifting hardcore from early 1992 once again proving that it wasn't all about the hoovers and bleeps. |

99 Red Balloons NewLewi Cifer 1993 Daddy Armhouse Must've required some major work on sample clearance with this one, but I can tell you that it's once hell of a tune from the supreme Daddy Armhouse stable! Blatantly ripps off an old 80s euro pop song and manages to turn cheese into gold in the process. These days, whoever masters the knack of doing this is going to be exceedingly rich! Well, yeah maybe not. Anyway this is class! Ruff piano stabs all the way through and fast, firey breaks in a '93 happy style. Totally crazy & mad, just the way hardcore should be! |

Always in My Mind Sub Love 1993 Earth Another classic track from those oldskool masters Sub Love. This one features plenty of cleverly programmed bleepy arpeggios, ruff, rolling breaks and some gorgeous vocal melodies which sound like they've been taken straight out of an old soul number from decades gone by, in fact I'm pretty sure they have, any more info on this track would be nice if you're in the know. The thing I love about this one the most though is the way that it combines darkness and the light without ever sounding out of place, and the creative idea of pitching up a sub bass to a high frequency bleep. A tune of true Sub Love calibre for those who love their subs! |

Asphxia Automation 1992 Triple XXX Absolutely rockin' raver taken from the Green EP from '92. Massive subbase, thumping breaks and twisted techno riffs what more can an oldskooler ask for?! I do think that this would sound better pitched up slightly as it's running fairly slowly for a '92 track but those harsh stabs, similar to the ones used in 'Venom - I Need Your Love' (see below) are as good as you're gonna get. |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Atmosphere (Sub-Base Field Mix) Chaos & Julia Set 1993 Recoil Ruff, rolling dark stuff with an extremely heavy bassline and even heavier breaks. Not really pure darkside as it has quite an uplifting breakdown and none of the obligatory horror samples used in a lot of darkcore (except for some eerie screeches), but it’s dark enough for me anyway and was played in quite a few of the more varied ’93 sets. Very stomping and quite hectic in places despite that fact that it’s not that fast for a ’93 tune. |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Bass Go Boom (Dope Remix) D-Cruze 1992 Suburban Base Rock hard, ragga tinged breaks on none other than the pioneering yet sadly defunct Suburban Base label. Jay D-Cruze was a real hardcore talent back in the day and still churns out some monster D'n'B tracks. This is one of his best tracks from '92 along with 'Want You Now' and 'Life (Hands to Heaven)'. The ragga samples are crazy if somewhat funny but they integrate perfectly with the rest of this frenzied hardcore mashup which breaks the limits at 160BPM! |

Come With Me NewThe Badman feat. NDX 1991 City Beat Another awesome headrusher from 1991 and this artist who produced the ultimate piano pleaser 'Higher than Heaven'. Here you have another incredible piano driven cut with massive breakbeats, vehement vocals and a slight dark classical orchestral drop out as was the order of the day with a number of late '91 tracks. A powerful, passionate journeying rave tune with superlative musical quality, I'd like to know if this artist produced any more tracks and who they are/what they are doing now as what I've heard from this tune and Higher then Heaven is nothing less than the best quality oldskool around. |

Come With Me Tonight (Midnight Mix) NewAfter Dark 1992 Music Man The original mix, although good, isn't a patch on this in my opinion. Loads of wicked variation in this, mad acid mayhem and high octane vocals speed into an airy, uplifting breakdown with a meaty synth riff propelling you into orbit. Another big '92 favourite of mine and a classic oldskool cut later to be followed by a number of equally good releases in the same year and on into '93. You gotta check 'The Edge of Darkness - Come Together' released later in '92 on ADR also produced by Dave Charlesworth, the man behind the label. |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Crystalize Dj Crystl 1993 Dee Jay Watch the subs on this rolling '93 darkcore amen frenzy. Dj Crystl sure did have a knack of how to create that menacingly dark sound for the latter half of the oldskool era and a wicked feel for chopping up breaks to boot. It all starts out very intense and moody with some deep pad harmonics and then the amen drops in! It's starts to sound very freaky and sinister at around 3:07 with reverberated female chanting vox which always make me shudder. Definitely worth a listen if you like your '93 style. This one goes out to Grazikor over in Italy, as you requested mate! |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Dancehall Dangerous (Terrorise Mix) Hackney Hardcore 1991 Strictly Hardcore Plenty of wicked mixes were released of this 1991 stormer and this is one of them. Hard electronic mayhem from the 'Strictly Hardcore' division of Strictly Underground Records and very well known and liked among most of the oldskool community here in the UK. A harder, faster amen driven mix of this was also released at the same time along with a bouncier techno sounding mix but all are great tunes in their own right. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Deep in Your Eyes (Manix Remix) Open Skies 1992 Reinforced Ruff, uplifting amen driven oldskool breaks. Plenty of harsh hoovers and elevating pianos and vocals. This is very typical Manix style oldskool, very rushy and energetic with lots of early happy hardcore influences. The original mix of this is more of a house tune but both mixes are equally as good. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Do You Wanna Party Bass Value 1991 3 Beat A wicked, smiley faced 1991 style hardcore house track which deftly switches between ruff, ragga driven techno riffs and catchy, hands in the air, piano breaks. Although I have to say that the tune wouldn't be half as good without those gorgeous vocal snippets and strings which put it a cut above the rest in my opinion. This is another example of how, back in the early days, you could take numerous styles, combine them into one and pull off a total slammer in the process! |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Energizer Vol. 1 Energizer 1991 White Label Rock hard, dark, hoover driven 1991 breakbeat hardcore and a bit of an anthem among oldskool purists. I know that vols. 2 - 4 were all produced by Ellis Dee but I read somewhere that this one wasn't? What the hell, they're all absolutely wicked hardcore mashups. This one has that classic breakbeat which was later used in 'Dub War Chapter 2' by Dance Conspiracy. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Ephemeral Tic Tac Toe 1992 White Label Massive dark tune back in the golden years, popular at all the big events at the time. I first heard this on the Top Buzz set from Fantazia 'Summertime' from 1992 and loved those nasty mean grinder synths and that fluffy melodic pad breakdown. This one for me is one of the stand out tracks from 1992 due to it's awesome originality and inventiveness and of course superlative use of the 'Hey Ho' amen break! This was actually made by one of the guys behind the 'slightly' more commercial dance act 'Basement Jaxx'. Next well be finding out that Scooter once upon a time made hardcore as well! Nah, that's going a bit too far. LOL! |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Feed the World Fantasy UFO 1991 Strictly Underground Not your typical Strictly Underground offering here, this one’s much mellower than most of the stuff they put out, but it’s still a great tune nonetheless. Deep, progressive sounding oldskool with calming ‘808 State’ style pads and riffs and a tough breakbeat. Quite dark in places but still very uplifting. A track with a lot of variation, which is always a good thing when it comes to oldskool. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Feel the Energy Blame 1992 Moving Shadow What a tune! This is one of my current favourites on the ’92 tip. So uplifting and euphoric. You would think that the heavy use of vocals would make this one a bit cheesy, no way! This is proper ’92 style hardcore, elevating to the max. The piano break is absolute class and I would rate this on a level with Blame’s old classic ‘Music takes You’. A must listen! |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Get Down (Hands in the Air Mix) M-D-Emm 1991 Strictly Underground Another of the early releases from Strictly Underground and a big tune on the '91 scene. This is a true classic hoover track which makes use of some nasty, aggressive stab patterns and deep, funky basslines. The 'Hardcore Ravers Mix' is the best version but this one is very similar and just as hard. In the same vein as other tracks of this period such as 'Human Resource - Dominator' and 'Beltram & Program 2 - The Omen'. 'Get funky, get down!'. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Ghetto People Static Substance 1992 Impact The 8th release on Dj Seduction's excellent 'Impact' label, hard and uplifting with some classic rave stabs and an ecstatic happy breakdown. This one was played out towards the end of '92 and later on into '93 when it had a remix. A big tune with Djs like Slipmatt, Sy & Seduction on the early happy hardcore curcuit. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Hasta La Vista Isotonik 1991 Orange Crazy, uplifting Isotonik style loony toon bizness from 1991. Kind of corney and cliched with that funny Arnold Schwarzeneger sample but a mental headbanger of a tune nonetheless with booming breaks, plenty of frenetic keyboard work and fierce, screeching distorted strings. Produced by Chris Paul (of Xpansions), Dj Hype & Grooverider anything and everything and Isotonik was top class as all you oldskoolers should know! Vocal samples taken from a deep house tune called 'Alright' by 'Urban Soul'. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Higher Than Heaven (Roar Mix) The Badman feat. NDX 1991 City Beat More housey piano hardcore from 1991, the year when different genres seemed to combine inseparably. I don’t know if the main vocal in this was first used by Bizarre Inc. or in this tune, but what the hell, it seems to work either way. Not very hardcore for a rave tune but very uplifting all the same, that piano break is pure sonic euphoria, you can’t get much better to be honest. So happy that it would even put a smile on the face of a man like Victor Meldrew. Most uplifting! As they say. |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
House is Mine NewThe Hypnotist 1991 Rising High A great combination of bright european house pianos courtesy of 'FPI Project - Rich in Paradise' and stomping, dark european techno mayhem courtesy of Rising High master Caspar Pound. Almost a schizoid track which goes from the sweetest of pianos to the harshest of 303 riffs around. No breakbeats on this one as it's more of a european style '91 affair with those eerie Spiral Tribe style acid undertones, not for the faint hearted as they say. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Hyperactive Sub Love 1992 Earth Tough breakbeat bizness from oldskool masters 'Sub Love' on their 'Twisted Techno EP' from 1992. Check the mellow vocal breakdown, incredible stuff! Another exceptional track from an artist who I wish would make a comeback with the oldskool revival going on. Incidentally, one half of Sub Love was Jody Wisternoff, from my neck of the woods over here in Bristol. He now produces some slammin' progressive house/trance tracks with Way Out West. |

I Need Your Love Venom 1992 Creative Rhythm Big thanks to 'Mouse' over on the B2VOS forum for IDing this one for me recently. I've heard this one on tapes from back in '91 but never had a clue what it was called until now. More dark sounding hardcore from the golden years of rave with masses of energy and a varied combination of hard riffs and dark strings. Yet another one of my current faves. Play it loud!!! |

I Want You (Manix Remix) NewOne II One 1992 Reinforced Seriously bangin' and uplifting Manix style piano action on this absolute stormer of a tune. Lovely full-bodied piano break courtesy of Manix make this remix superior to the original in many respects. I can see my self dancing like an absolute lunatic to this one as it's so damn catchy. What with the happy strings & pianos and those mental hoover riffs this one's a track that I just can't get enough of mate! Gimme the music... |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Instructions of Life Turntable Symphony 1991 D-Zone Smooth, uplifting housey hardcore on Dance Zone Records. I didn't know the name of this track for years after hearing it played out on pirate radio back in the day but stumbled across it on a copy of 'Kaos Theory' (top oldskool comp) a while back. It's got some smooth housey pianos and uses the vocal from 'Dj Seduction - Hardcore Heaven'. A nice variation of mellow and ruff vibes make this one a great track for both raves and clubs alike. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Journey Through Time Harmony & Extreme 1992 Lucky Spin Another frantic Lucky Spin release epitomising that early happy hardcore sound with some heavily mutated breakbeats and a monster sub bass. Plenty of variation here including a smooth pad drop out before the breaks kick back in hard with a choppy Nebula 2 style stab section. I'm very much into this kind of style at the moment and want to get it going again with some nu style oldskool tracks, check out my tune 'Particle Accelerator' for something along similar lines to this one. |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Kounter Act (Sensi Mix) Raging Rockers 1992 Ruby Red Featuring one of the best piano lines from the early rave years this has to be a firm favourite of mine from late 1991 and early '92. This mix is slightly darker and ruffer than the original and uses some catchy trademark ragga samples to good effect. It tends to sound a bit odd when pitched up but always goes down a bomb in any '91 or '92 set for me. Good stomping kicks and amen breaks for the headstrong among us. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Let The Music Use You (NRG remix) The Nightwriters 1992 FFRR I’ve gotta say that I prefer this version to the original house mix, probably due to the amazing piano riff which comes in about half way through. Not all that hardcore for ’92, this sounds more like a ’91 tune. It takes the main riff used in the original mix (and also in SL2’s ‘Djs Take Control’) a builds a fantastic hand raising hardcore track around it. Superb uplifting oldskool! |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Let Your Mind Be Free Manix 1992 Reinforced Sunny, uplifting track from one of my favourite ever hardcore producers. Manix did so many wicked tunes back in the day that I could devote a whole page just to them, but this is just one among many classic piano hardcore numbers that they released on Reinforced. I’m sure I’ll be putting up a few more in time to come so keep checking back if you’re a fan. Uplifting UK style bizness from the best year in dance music. |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Let's Get High Lords of Acid 1991 Subway Right! Time for some noisy, thumping euro hardcore (as if I don’t give you enough). Lords of Acid produced some odd if original sounding tunes back in the day which were frequently pretty crazy and outlandish. This one, however, is a typical piece of Belgian oldskool techno, fierce and aggressive. Along the same lines as some of N-joi’s ‘91/’92 stuff this uses hard, nasty riffs and energy inducing samples. |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Love in my Heart Harmony & Extreme 1992 Lucky Spin I think this one must've come out towards the end of '92 as I've only ever heard it on early '93 tapes. Ruff, compressed amens at around 155bpm power this one along insistently with catchy, uplifting riffs and pads providing that anthemic quality needed for a tune of this sort. I would say that this is along the lines of early happy hardcore due to the fast tempo and hard amen breaks, the kind of track that Slipmatt and Seduction would play back in '93. Wicked stuff! |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Meditation NewDj Crystl 1994 Dee Jay Time for me to slot in a request for the man like 'MikeJRBackAgain' who emailed me a while back, this one's yours mate. Lovely relaxing, chilled ambient jungle which wouldn't really be in this section if it wasn't for those crunching amen drops and a groundshaking sub-bass. Another one from the talented Dj Crystl this time after the Lucky Spin releases, a little later on in 1994 when lush, melodic ambient jungle was the order of the day the counterpart of the happy breakbeats of Slipmatt, Ellis Dee, Vibes etc... This one should make you feel good! |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Music and Noise Set Up System 1991 XL One of the early XL releases, a superb track on an exceptional label. Slow and hard with heavy use of 303s, this one’s almost an acid house tune although the main breakdown is quite ravey using a classic hardcore synth and riff. This would probably fit nicely into any Dj set, house or early oldskool. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Owl Indotribe 1991 Jumpin’ & Pumpin’ One of those elusive hardcore tracks produced by none other than ‘The Future sound of London’. They did some excellent rave tunes back in the early ‘90s and this is one of them. Hard, pumping hardcore with a fierce bassline and aggressive techno riffs. Unfortunately this mix doesn’t have the ‘I let rip on the industrial tip’ sample which was used in the original but everything else remains intact. Dark & powerful stuff!!! |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Peacemaker Nebula II 1992 Reinforced Now this is what I call harsh! Rolling, speedy breaks and sped up chipmunk vox (I’ve no idea what they’re saying). Some noisy, grating synths here with elements of early darkcore. Nebula II always seemed to put out darker oldskool tracks (every one superb!). Another great Nebula II track ‘Séance’ is also listed below, take a listen for some more hard, dark oldskool mayhem. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Pumper Edit V 1994 Impact I'm not really a fan of post '94 hardcore so I would say that for me this was one of the last good 4-beat tracks. Here you have your typical '94 style kicks combined with some superb breakbeat sequencing and a mellow yet very uplifting pad and piano chorus. This one came out towards the end of '94 and was played into '95 yet despite the unimaginative offbeat stabs, which come in in the latter half of the track, this was a real standout track for me at a time when hardcore was becoming cliched. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Rabbit City 004 Force Mass Motion 1992 Rabbit City Some more banging oldskool techno from veteran producers 'Force Mass Motion'. Plenty of fierce Prodigy style stabs, crazy samples and a wicked elevating dropout. Kind of similar in style to their track 'Explosion' (which I'll be uploading soon) from around the same time but less well known. A techno tune which is only for the headstrong, annihilating! |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Resistor Resistor/Rhythm Section 1993 Rhythm Section Now we're talkin' hardcore!!! One of my favourite '93 tunes produced by the master of breakbeat 'Rennie Pilgrem' who these days spins and produces some of the toughest nu-skool breaks around. Plenty of sci-fi samples and ruff hoovers in this one with a booming amen break bringing up the rear. In terms of oldskool you don't get much ruffer! Another rugged roller from the Rhythm Section. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Ronnie's Revenge (Remix) Citadel of Kaos 1994 Boombastic Plastic A mellow ’94 remix of a well known ’92 anthem, and a damn good one at that! Gone are the hard rave stabs and choppy breakbeats used in the original and a more melodic synth and string section is used to beef up the piano break which remains intact. You also have the trademark Citadel of Kaos 303s which they used in a number of their later works. While the original is a great hardcore stomper of a tune, this one is light and quite relaxing proving that ’94 hardcore was not just about stomping amen breaks and manic pianos. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Seance (Remix) Nebula II 1992 Reinforced I’ve heard this remix played more frequently than the original on quite a few oldskool tapes so I’m putting it up here instead, (also due to the fact that IMO it’s better!). Hard Reinforced style rave with an uplifting break and vocals. The hard/uplifting combination always seems to work well in oldskool tunes giving you that momentary break from the head-mashing synth riffs and putting you into a state of wild elation. This tune does that perfectly! |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Sensory Deception (Remix) MK 13 1991 Sonic Sound One of my current favourites it has to be said, an amazingly creative piece of dark '91 hardcore with some eerie samples and a chunky, phat bassline. The original is just as good as this remix, using a more techno oriented vibe and a different arrangement but I've chosen to put this one up as I just love that bass! A unique 1991 style slammer!!! |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Set Your Body Free The Sorcerer 1992 ADR Massive tune back in ’92, cained frequently by Top Buzz, Ellis Dee and Slipmatt among others. This has some wicked hands in the air drop outs and pianos and that timeless break used in Bizarre Inc’s ‘Raise me’. One of my all time favourites I have to say, I loved this tune since the first time I heard it. An anthem that never goes away and yet refuses to ever sound dated and overplayed. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Smoke Dis One (Remix) Bass Ballistics 1992 J4M A ruff, rolling hardcore amen cut-up on J4M from the same people who brought you the euphoric anthem 'Fantasy'. This one's harder though with manic, aggressive samples and rushy stacatto rave stabs. High octane hardcore for the real oldskoolers and those who were there in '92. A track which sounds even better when pitched up to 150BPM + and works in faster darkcore and uplifting sets alike. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Solid Circle Sil 1991 Rhythm Some typical Belgian sounding hardcore here from back in the early days. This one’s more 4/4 oriented and at a slower tempo (quite housey in some respects). A good variation of hard and uplifting vibes here making this one an underplayed anthem. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Sub Sector Chemical 1993 Basement Lets face it anything released on Basement has got to be good but this one is truly outstanding. Hard stabs, pianos, tough breaks, beautiful strings and vox, this one has all the ingredients for a cracking tune. Along with their other track ‘Hex’ (I’ll be putting that one up as well) this has to be one of the most underrated tracks of ’93. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Suicidal Dj Crystl 1992 Lucky Spin One of those darker, more menacing '92 tracks which I will always remember from LTJ Bukem's fantastic set at Dreamscape IV. One tape that I always guard jealously! Using similar ideas, samples and riffs to Carl Cox's big track 'Lets Do It' from 1991 but a whole lot harder and darker thanks to those grinding synths and high-powered breakbeats. The darker side of breakbeat began with tracks like this IMO. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Take Me Higher (Higher Mix) Band of Gypsies 1991 Pulse-8 An absolute classic piano pleaser from veteran label Pulse-8. It starts off as a dark, thumpy Belgian sounding techno track and builds to the most ecstatic of piano powered choruses. If you're like me and bought up all of those dodgy rave compilations from the early '90s then you might know that this was released on a commercial dance album called 'The Spirit of Ecstacy'. Most of the tracks on there were your normal Rozalla & 2 Unlimited chart dance stuff but on one tape there was a whole side of real hardcore tunes including this one. Also to be found on Top Buzz's classic set from Fantazia NYE 1991/92. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Ten 44 Freestyle & DJR 1993 Awesome A hard, funky proto happy hardcore stomper with some extremely ruff breaks and melancholy piano riffs. Crazy, hyperfast mayhem from the year when rave went very hectic, the climax for me is when frenzied organ stab hits in after the piano break. Very '93 and very nose bleed inducing! Once again watch those subs. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
The Power Within NewLiquid Crystal 1992 Bizarre Just one word for this one. Incredible! Listen and you'll know what I'm talking about, there's just about every possible feeling in this track, the deep, the dark, the harsh, the wacky and the euphoric. Slightly warped and eccentric sampling of the children's film Mary Poppins gives this some very bizarre undertones, this combined with rock hard amen breaks and grinding sirens and bleeps and rushing piano stabs makes it one of the best tunes around in my book. With 9 1/2 minutes of pure genius at you're disposal it would be wrong for me not to put it here. Apologies though for a slight hitch in the file about halfway through, hope it doesn't spoil things for you. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Time of our Lives Jay J & Devious D 1993 Awesome Massive, uplifting ragga tinged hardcore which surfaced towards the end of '92 later to be released on 'Awesome Records' in '93. Lazy ragga basslines and vocals drop nicely over a firing, chunky breakbeat and then the happy rave stabs kick in. Top notch oldskool mayhem, rough, rugged and raw! |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
True Love Mystic & Fire 1993 Impact Always loved this tune since the day I heard it on a tape of Dj Ramos @ Dreamscape 10. Really deep, happy/sad strings and piano melodies and some classic vocals nicked from an earlier hardcore tune entitled 'GTO - Listen to the Rhythm Flow'. I've heard another (slightly better) mix of this played by Dj Sy with a different vocal but this one is still superb with those rolling breaks and phat basslines, a true classic! |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
T-Tree Nookie 1993 Reinforced Much mellower than the previous 2 tracks and not a typical Nookie tune. Four to the floor kicks and a catchy breakbeat combine with some lush sweeping pads and nature FX. Not quite as good IMO as some of his more uplifting numbers but very nice all the same. Quite underplayed as well. |
Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Tubular Breaks (Original Mix) Heartless 1993 Heartless Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this one was played mostly in ’94 but came out towards the end of ’93. One of the more diverse tracks of that period, combining hard beats and dark synths with the melody from Mike Oldfield’s ‘Tubular Bells’. Quite dark and eerie in some ways but without resembling dark drum ‘n’ bass. This one was played in quite a few of the happier sets back in ‘93/’94 and fitted in well due to its strong 4/4 beat and rolling breaks. Well worth checking out. |

Universe#1 S. McCarthy & D. Charlesworth 1993 Universe Another rare gem of a tune from 1993, one of the best from that year in my opinion. Hard and fast kicks and breaks with an insanely uplifting breakdown and some head mashing stabs to follow. A total rollercoaster ride of a tune which, to my knowledge, wasn't played much around the time it was released. Well I've got to say Edge #1 might be your standard oldskool anthem for today's events but for me it's gotta be this one, Universe#1 which goes down as one of my all time anthems. Anyone who has the tape Grooverider Dreamscape 10 will know that this was dropped at the end of his dark jungle oriented set and somehow doesn't sound a touch out of place. A top notch all round hardcore hair-raiser!!! |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
Vertigo Dj Rap & Aston 1993 Suburban Base I was never really that keen on 'Devine Rhythm' as a hardcore tune, too cheesy & Ratpack sounding for my tastes but Dj Rap's harder pieces never fail to get my feet stomping and blood pumping. This one has a nice mixture of funky roughness, manic bass action and uplifting vocals and organ riffs. I think this is the flip side to the equally good, more drum 'n' bassy 'Jeopardy' which was a big hitting Subbase tune at the time. |

Title: Artist: Year: Label: Description: |
World Wide Epidemic Top Buzz 1992 ? I actually prefer this one to their classic cut 'Living in Darkness' although only marginally as they are both great tunes. I don't think that this ever got an official release I just remember it being one of my favourite tunes from the 'Fantazia - The first Taste' compilation. Very deep and slightly dark atmospheric hardcore with incredibly chunky breakbeats and spacey bleeps and synth voices. 'Now takin' you deep' as Mad P used to say when Mikey B & Jason Kaye were tearing up the crowd with potent rollers like this one! |

Yeah Yeah Yeah NewThe Joker 1992 Madhouse Alex Lee's Italio house raiser 'Take It' was a top top tune, but this one's even better! A hardcore mashup using that classic piano section from the original house track and ramming in loads of hectic 303s and classic techno stabs. Slipmatt's SMD Vol. 2 used the same piano riff to make a 1993 happy hardcore masterpiece, but this '92 version is definitely up there with the best as well. |

You & Me NewDj Seduction 1991 Impact A cracking old 1991 stomper from Seduction here, one of the first releases on his Impact label. Ruff 4/4 and think break combos fire relentlessly over some catchy, melodic transitions, and as with all of Seduction's tunes the timing and production is totally flawless. Did this man ever produce a tune which was below par? I've yet to find one. This one was a big track towards the end of '91 along with his equally brilliant top 40 smash 'Hardcore Heaven'. |
